Since my arrival from the territory of New Spain, many of my friends have expressed a wish that I would communicate my opinion on the result of a commercial intercourse with the inhabitants of those regions bordering on Louisiana.
Situated as we are, enjoying the benefit of the manufactures of the whole world, and contiguous to a country whose population, of about seven millions of souls, covering a large portion of the continent, richly impregnated with the precious metals, & possessing no manufactures of their own, will afford the most abundant harvest to those adventurers who may convey them goods in exchange for their gold and silver.
This must be effected by forming such direct or oblique course as our proximity with the interior affords us. It will do me much pleasure to communicate through the medium of the press, the knowledge I have obtained during my travels from latitude 19, 30 to lat. 36 north, where I have in an especial manner applied myself to such commercial operations as by its development every one may draw such advantage as their industry & enterprize may merit, and I shall be abundantly remunerated if I can render myself beneficial to my country men.
I remain with great regard,
J. CLAMORGAN.
