The Albany Evening Journal says: "There is one army that will never quit Italy. It sleeps on its arms in an eternal bivouac. New recruits join at an average of a thousand a day. They are picked men, the bravest in both armies—the foremost in every battle. In twenty seven days Italy has been strewn with twenty seven thousand corpses—the poor fellows who sought an equality, and found a grave. A thousand fell in the various early skirmishes. A thousand marked the invasion of Garibaldi. Nine hundred French and Sardinians perished at Montebello. Two thousand Austrians on the same field. Two hundred Zouaves were killed in Palestro. As many Sardinians died with them. Four hundred Austrians were drowned in the canal. More than twenty thousand must have fallen in the actions at Buffalora and Magenta.
The Journal then speaks, by name, of the distinguished officers killed and wounded, adding; "But this is the fortune of war." There must be deaths, or there can be no promotion. A dozen eager hands are ready to grasp the baton as it falls from the hands of the dying Marshal. A dozen eager hearts burn for the gold epaulets whose last owner lies dead in the ditch. From the General of the Division down to the sous-lieutenant, each finds his commander's corpse a stepping stone to his own glory."
