Occupation.—The San Francisco papers state that the Government has directed the military occupation of the large island of Santa Catalina, which fronts on the Bay of San Pedro, on the southern coast of California. The island has of late become important from the fact that numerous rich mines have been discovered therein. It possesses a fine harbor, which will no doubt be made of avail as a naval as well as military depot. It has been rumored to be made the rendezvous of Confederate pirates, who were to make an attempt at capturing some of the treasure-laden Panama steamers and then strike a blow at our whole commerce on the Pacific; and it is not impossible that this circumstance may have led to the occupation of the island.
