The Modeste Man of War, which arrived at Port Royal on Friday last from a Cruise, was, we hear, near being lost; for going down on the Main, to the leeward of Carthagena, she unfortunately touched upon a Reef, where she beat her false Keel off, and was obliged to throw several of her Guns and Stores overboard, but luckily, after continuing there near forty Hours, she got off. And, what is more agreeable to relate, they, by Aid of a new refracting Instrument, invented by the ingenious and worthy Commander, got their Guns, Stores, and even their false Keel aboard; so that we hope to see it recorded, in the future Annals of naval History, that Captain Wheelock, of his Majesty's Ship of War the Modeste, was the first Commander that entered a Port with his Keel on his Deck.
