COMMUNICATED.

Hon. C. F. Mercer.-We wish we could always see justice done to merit. Few men have done more for the country than Mr. Mercer. He is one of the few whose works as well as his fame will survive him. He is writing his name not where it must soon be effaced, but on great and imperishable works of public utility, thence to be copied in the history of a future age.

He possesses the rare virtues of consistency and perseverance.-Christian Statesman.

"The report that Mr. Mercer of Virginia, intends to decline being a candidate for re-election to Congress, is without foundation. We are glad it is so. Mr. Mercer is a reasonable, cool-headed man; never goes off at half cock; never gets himself, or others into scrapes, and is not apt to speak when he has nothing to say. We want more such men in Congress and elsewhere."-N. Y. Journal of Commerce.
