No Fences, Please

Livestock prices have been dropping for two years. A few days ago choice fed steers and yearlings were selling on the Chicago market for about $18 to $23 a hundred pounds; a year before the range was from $35 to $36. Secretary of Agriculture Benson appointed a livestock advisory committee to study the problem, and it later reported that the cattlemen want neither government subsidies nor price supports.

In an editorial entitled No Help Wanted the Wall Street Journal commented: Raising beef cattle is no cinch. Since the days when the Texas longhorn was driven over the dusty Chisholm trail to Kansas City, a man has had to have a certain amount of independence even to want to get into the game. The oldtimers fought Indians flash floods, drought, rustlers and fencing laws. It is no wonder that today's cattlemen choose to ride the price change alone without government protection. For they know that whatever the government protects it has a habit of fencing in.

We might add that this is true regardless of whose administration is in power. The cattlemen, exhibiting a renewal of the frontier spirit which made this nation what it is today, were acting in their own interests of course taking the only position safeguarding their existence as free agents and avoiding the blight of bureaucracy's control.
