CHEAPER PRINT PAPER.
The paper problem is going to be solved by the substitution of some other material for wood pulp in the manufacture of print paper.
The agitation is warm.
The New Orleans Times-Democrat has led off in this matter in the south, and the good work it has accomplished is surely tending to bring in a substitute. The subject is attracting attention in Europe as it is in the United States and the enquiries that are now started are not going to be hushed until the publishers of this country secure paper beyond the accident of its being again tied up in a paper mill trust. The Times-Democrat is on the right track, and its suggestion that the newspapers themselves should own and control the process is also all right. There is no need of the intelligence of the country being unnecessarily taxed for its daily news. It will be to the interest of the newspapers to furnish the news as cheaply as possible and to this end cheap paper is a necessity. Paper at cost under the wisest regulations that business men with business sense could establish would be the saving of the country from any extra tariff on newspapers, and at the same time enable the newspaper publishers to realize a reasonable profit out of their enterprise.
Low priced paper is something that every one would enjoy the benefit of, for it is something that concerns every man who takes a newspaper. Progress is being made along the lines indicated in the previous article in the Light in referring to this matter. The inventive mind of the United States will be found equal to the task of discovery required of it, and in time the cheap print paper will be here and the newspaper man read his title clear to the exactions of the pulp makers of this present.
