Behind the News

HOSPITAL BOARD MEMBER Macomber is worried about money matters at the city-owned institution.

They are almost broke although they were left with a healthy reserve by the previous board.

Their finances are so low now they could not meet an emergency should one arise . . without borrowing money from the city.

Uncollected hospital bills may be one reason for the financial dilemma.

On top of this employees are asking for a wage increase . .. and the city would like to collect the hospital share of the pension plan . . which is getting larger each month.

Aftermath of the Harris deal is the X-ray man's demand for an immediate contract. He also wants the board to defend him against the newspaper allegations. His attorney is very much excited . .. but the board refuses to put up a public defense.

Privately. some of them admit the newspaper stories were true . . . and see no reason for sticking their own necks out in a defense of the arrangement.
