WASHINGTON, D. C. - Dr. Roscoe C. Giles, prominent Chicago physician who served with distinction with the Army Medical Corps during the war, was one of two Negro physicians appointed last week as consultants to the Secretary of War.
The appointments were made through the surgeon general under the army medical department's program to maintain military medicine at a high plane during peace time, the war department announcement stated.
Appointed with Dr. Giles was Dr. William E. Allen, Jr., of St. Louis, Mo., also a former member of the army medical corps. Both men served at Station Hospital No. 1, Fort Huachuca, Ariz., Dr. Giles as chief of the surgical service and Dr. Allen as chief of x-ray service.
The announcement stated that all surgeons and physicians appointed as consultants are specialists in their respective fields and are for the most part former medical corps officers who served with distinction during the war.
The appointments are part of the medical department's program to maintain the highest possible standards of medical practice.
Dr. Giles, who lives at 541 E. 46th pl., is the first Negro graduate of Cornell university's school of medicine. He served as lieutenant colonel in the medical corps.
Dr. Allen is a graduate of the Howard university school of medicine.
