WASHINGTON, D.C., Feb. 6 (JACL) - The House approved legislation to extend the time for filing claims for the return of vested wartime property four years after the enactment of the act. The Washington office of the Japanese American Citizens League was informed Thursday.
The bill, approved before adjournment by the Senate last summer, now goes to the White House where the President is expected to sign it into law within the next few days.
The JACL endorsed measure strikes out the April 30, 1949 deadline for the filing of claims against the Office of Alien Property and extends it to a year after the enactment of the act.
The Washington JACL office hailed the passage of this bill as a needed and meritorious measure which will enable many persons of Japanese ancestry on the mainland, Hawaii, and even Japan who for one reason or another were unable to comply with the original deadline to file for the return of their rightful property.
"This legislation takes on added significance," Mike Masaoka, Washington JACL representative said, "in the light of the recommendations of the Dirksen (Senator Everett M. Dirksen, R., Ill.) chairman of the Senate Judiciary Subcommittee investigating the Office of Alien Property."
Subcommittee that all wartime vested private property should be returned to former owners.
If the Congress accepts this thesis even property belonging to Japanese nationals in Japan will be returned and the alien property program liquidated.
Thus every person with a legitimate claim should file a claim as soon as the legislation becomes law in order to protect his interests.
