WASHINGTON, Jan. 2.-(AP)—Two separate conferences were held in this city today both of them being for the purpose of further discussion of a compromise on the treaty and immediate action by the senate upon its convening next Monday. It seems apparent that the Underwood suggestion for the appointment of a conciliation committee has almost stampeded the mild reservation republicans and is causing the opposition senators considerable uneasiness.
In a conference today Senator Lodge, as leader of the radical opposition to the treaty, and Senator McNary, of Oregon, as head of the mild reservationists, discussed how far the republicans can go with modifications of the reservations submitted by the foreign relations committee. At the same time Senators Hitchcock, Swanson, King and other democrats conferred on what reservations will be acceptable as not being in fact amendments masquerading under the guise of reservations.
Both sides are trying to solve the difficulty presented by article ten. It is generally believed that an agreement will be reached on the treaty soon. It is reported on responsible authority that Senator McNary told Senator Lodge that the republicans must abandon their defiant attitude of opposition and make an aggressive fight for a compromise otherwise the mild reservationists will line up solidly in favor of the Underwood proposal.
