Annabell Annual Says
Start spading bulb beds as soon as summer material can be cleared off.
Plant daffodils as early as you can get the bulbs. They need a long growing season to be at their best. New roots start in July if they remain in the ground.
Use a dibber with care for large bulbs. You will need to learn a twist of the wrist to enlarge the hole at the bottom so the bulb won't be left hung, that is, with an air space underneath it where the roots cannot touch earth.
Get in grass seed for sowing this fall.
Clear off all dead vegetable stalks. They harbor a supply of bugs for next year. Burn stalks and spread the ashes on the garden.
Sow parsley for the cold frame. You can have it all winter. Better still, transplant mature plants from the garden.
Don't let weeds seed this fall when one is apt to get lazy. It means a double crop next year if you do.
Get seeds of hardy annuals to sow this fall-poppies, larkspurs, California poppies, snapdragons,
even petunias. Any plants you know self sow naturally can be sown this fall.
Get some of the gorgeous amaryllis bulbs for window display. They are sure bloomers and their culture is fool proof.
Get hyacinths going now in pots or glasses. Set them in a dark place to make roots.
Divide and reset early spring blooming perennials now such as bleeding hearts, peonies, leopard's bane, pyrethrums. Shasta daisies.
Tulips can be left until the last for planting. Any time the ground can be worked up to December will do for these.
Buy a dibber to plant small bulbs. It makes putting them in the ground a comparatively light and speedy task.
Don't move gaillardias this fall. They resent fall moving and usually die over the winter.
