AN ELEPHANT
KILLS A LION.

The watchman at the winter quarters of Forepaugh's menagerie, Frankford, near Philadelphia, was startled about 8:30 o'clock yesterday morning by a terrific roar from the direction of the lion and elephant section of the building. He rushed to the place and was horrified to find a large and ferocious Asiatic lion engaged in a mutual combat with a gigantic and furious African elephant. Just as the keeper arrived he beheld the lion crouched ready to spring upon his antagonist. The elephant seemed to be awaiting the onslaught. Before the alarmed and excited man could call for assistance or secure a weapon to prevent the encounter, the lion sprang on the elephant, clawing and tearing her in a frightful manner. The latter, however, soon found an opportunity to use her immense tusks, which she ran completely through the body of her assailant, killing him almost instantly. The lion's dying roar could be heard for squares, and was appalling. Some time elapsed before the dead animal could be unfastened and the elephant's tusks withdrawn. When this was accomplished the latter's passion subsided. The elephant, though seriously injured, will probably survive.
