Extensive Losses of Cattle Led to Investigation--Shipped to Sioux City.
Dallas, S. D., Dec. 30.--In the arrest of three well known young men of Gregory county on the charge of cattle rustling, an attack has been launched against the numerous mysterious losses of stock in the Rosebud country for the past few months. Those arrested are Ed Duncan, of Gregory, and Ray Kolbe and Theron Sheib, of Dixon. They were taken into custody by Sheriff H. I. Pierce and Deputies Ray Garner and Tom Conway, following extended investigations.
One of the heaviest losers in Gregory was August Lenser, located near Dixon, who had 27 head of cattle stolen at one time. He has been working with the authorities in tracing the thefts. Some of the cattle were shipped to Sioux City commission houses, though none have been recovered.
Other losses in the Dixon country have proved conclusively that a well organized band of rustlers was doing the work, but no arrests were made because it was necessary to follow up various clues, which finally led to these young men, who had been under suspicion for some time.
As soon as the evidence was secured to make the case strong enough to warrant action, warrants were issued. Duncan, who lives at Gregory, waived examination and was released under $2,000 bond for his appearance before County Judge Davis on January 4.
Kolbe and Sheib were taken to Fairfax and lodged in jail. The hearing was continued owing to the absence of the state's leading witness and will be held as soon as he can be brought to Fairfax.
