The Editors of the Hallowell Gazette, in announcing the quietus of the Separation question, remarks that "the history of this business is as curious as it is instructive--originated by ambition, supported by fallacy and defeated by rashness. The same men that got it up, by their ill advised and preposterous measures, also put it down. Whether--as has been more than hinted--the Report of the Brunswick Convention, was intended to be a fable 'cunningly devised' by the Chairman of the famous Reporting Committee to defeat a purpose which militated with his private wishes, we pretend not to decide--we leave it to be settled between him and his friends. Be that as it may, it would be ungrateful in us not to acknowledge our obligations to that gentleman for his able and effectual co-operation in averting a public misfortune."
