The most note-worthy occurrence of the week is the formal withdrawal of Senator Hamlin, of Maine, from the Democratic party.
Mr. Hamlin, on yesterday, rose in the Senate and desired to be excused from any further service as chairman of the Committee on Commerce; and he made the request because his relations with the majority of the Senate were to be such in the future that he could no longer hold that position with propriety.
He had opposed the repeal of the Missouri Compromise, uniformly and steadily.
"But the thing was done in violation of the principles of that party with whom he had always acted, and in violation of the solemn pledges of the President of the United States in his inaugural message. He could very well see how Senators could have voted for the Nebraska bill, under the belief that no evil results would follow; but how Senators could now support that measure, with the evils before their eyes which have resulted from it, and which threaten the peace of the whole country, was more than he could understand.
"Since, however, the Cincinnati Convention had endorsed this measure, in its consummation and in its results, he therefore felt it his duty to declare that he could no longer maintain party associations with any party that insisted upon such doctrines, and that he could support no man for President who avowed them. In the coming contest he should labor for the defeat of the Democratic ticket."
Mr. Hamlin has served the Democratic party with untiring zeal and acknowledged efficiency in both Houses of Congress for many years. By his industry and gentlemanly demeanor he has secured the respect of men of all parties, and of the country at large. His loss to the Democratic party, at this crisis in its fate, will be severely felt. It foreshadows the loss of Maine, that staunch old Democratic State, by at least 10,000 majority. So they go!
Let us now hear from South Carolina and Georgia.
