CHILLICOTHE, June 22d, 1833.
Gentlemen--I have received your letter of the 6th of this month, and assure you it is not easy for me to express my sense of such hospitality and kindness as it manifests. The friendly sentiments evinced by the portion of the citizens of Nashville whom you represent, and the manner in which you convey those sentiments, are entitled to my warmest thanks, and increase, greatly, the regret I experience in finding it impracticable to visit your city. There is so much sickness, in some places, and so much alarm in others, South of the Ohio River, that I have felt it to be proper to cut short my journey, even without going into Kentucky, to which I am so near. It only remains to me to hope that, at some future time, I may have an opportunity of visiting so important a part of our country as Tennessee, and particularly Nashville; and of shaking hands with some old friends, and of cultivating the acquaintance of other gentlemen, who have manifested for me so much kindness in advance. I pray you to present my thanks, and to tender my most sincere good wishes to those who have joined with you in this invitation, and to receive for yourselves, personally, my respects and cordial salutations.
Your ob't serv't.
DANIEL WEBSTER.
