The State Journal and the Democracy of Placer.
The State Journal in its issue of the 7th inst., has various articles in its columns in relation to the "poor devoted Democracy of Placer." From the manner in which the Placer Herald is pitched into, one would suppose that the sapient editor of the Journal had been pinched. That consistent sheet is crowded with a lugubrious account of the misdeeds of the little paper printed in the town of Auburn. By the Journal's article we are led to think the Herald has been guilty of all the crimes in the political calendar, and that the Journal is an honest sheet and as "pure as an angel of light." That it never knew anything but Democracy--and wouldn't for anything short of--the State Printing.
We have but little space or time to devote to the lamentations and reflections of the Journal. That sheet may go on with its abuse of the Democracy of Placer county--it may deride and upbraid, cast its slurs and epithets, and do what it can to bring our intelligent and reliable democrats into disrepute--we shall say but little to prevent it. Neither shall we exert ourself much to disabuse the mind of the Journal in regard to the feelings and sentiments of the Democracy of this county; for we well know that the time is coming when that sheet will be convinced "against its will." And convinced, too, that the Placer Herald is not only Democratic, but that it is sustained and recognised as such by the Democratic party of Placer county.
You, Mr. Journal, sit in your sanctum, in your easy chair, and receive "reliable" information that the Herald is not recognised as a Democratic paper in this county. We well know the source from which your information comes. We are glad that you are satisfied with it. No doubt they told you that Placer was a sterling Democratic county--this is true; and that they, your "reliable" informers, were the head and front of it, and that upon all important questions they could carry the county as they saw fit, and give expression to the party. Poor easy soul! here they deceived you most egregiously. You have been led to think all this: and yet when you most need the action and power of your "reliable" informers, the voice of the people annihilates all their pretended influence, and they sink into insignificance before an indignant people, whose constitutional rights you would sacrifice for the sake of getting the public printing. If you could succeed in bringing on the election this winter, then, perhaps, you might be remunerated in this way for aiding to deprive the people of their rights--remunerated as freely as you are now with the curses of the citizens of Sacramento, who have been kept out of the capital by your peculiar combinations. Alas, poor Mr. Journal! can't you get your "reliable" informers to come to your rescue? Indeed, you are in a pitiable plight. The Placer Herald, obstreperous sheet! still continues to keep the Democratic Committee at the head of its columns, and refuses to recognise the action of twenty-three men who have been the laughing-stock of the whole county since the 12th of November last. It will persist in opposing our cherished scheme of electing a United States Senator this winter; and it has developed how we agreed our members should vote for Broderick, provided his friends would vote for Sacramento for the capital, and thus the people in the mountains got disgusted at us, and their representatives wouldn't vote for our city because we had made an innocent trade. Oh, sacre! what shall we do? our own people swear at us for cheating them out of the capital, and there is no chance for the election to come off! we have done more to divide the Democratic party than any other paper in the State; and although we set down all those who oppose the Senatorial election as Bolters, we would like to have them back to aid us in our interested scheme! And then we have been such a consistent soul. Not only been cheating the people of Sacramento out of the capital, and the people out of their rights, but have dosed them with heavy draughts of Federalism; have lauded the citizens of Nevada for petitioning the Legislature to remove the capital, and have condemned the people for petitioning against the election of United States Senator--believing in petitions when they were for our interest and condemning them when they were against it. And that Herald! that Placer Herald! oh, we shall die! That Auburn paper, and those Independent Democrats in the Legislature, who won't bring on our election for Senator, they'll be the death of us!
Now, Mr. Journal, we pray you not to take it so hard as this. We desire you should live, if for no other purpose than a standing mark to every free and independent democrat, of the perversion of democracy, when no reliance is had upon the intelligence of its legitimate source--the people.
