Full Text

The Postmaster General has positively refused to the investigating Committee of the Senate, copies of the letters relating to the dismissal and appointment of Postmasters at Putnam, Ohio. The Administration presses, who were so loud in their condemnation of the Bank for denying, under its charter, to submit to inquisitorial proceedings, raise not a voice in reprobation of the Postmaster General's conduct. He, like his master is above law and above responsibility. The Enquirer is mum too! "Verite sans peur," (liberally translated) means: "Tell the truth, and a little more than the truth, against the opposition; but when one of 'the party' commits enormities, don't tell the 'truth,' for 'fear' it might hurt the cause."

From the Williamsport Banner

The Postmaster General, it seems, has refused to furnish the Senate Committee, now in session at Washington, with information touching some of the abuses in his Department, and has published his answer to the Committee by way of appeal to the People. From the National Intelligencer of Wednesday last, which has an article upon this subject, we make an extract showing the nature of the case which the Postmaster would conceal.—

"In the case in which the Postmaster General has expressly refused the information sought for, and which he has made the subject of his appeal— (that of the removal of the Postmaster at Putnam, in Ohio)—it was one which had attracted much public notice, and was within the legitimate scope of inquiry and competency of the Committee. Henry Safford, an honest, faithful and intelligent officer, had been removed, and a man of bad character appointed in his place, who, after being permitted to hold the office fifteen or eighteen months, without ever making a return to the Department, absconded with the avails of the office in his pocket: and the Department has permitted the claim against the sureties to lie without suit, until they are released from their responsibility. The committee, it appears, inquired into the causes of the removal of Safford and of the appointment of Berron, his successor. The Postmaster General refused to give the information, and the Government paper joins the Postmaster General in assailing the committee for asking it.— Such is the case on which the Head of the Department had joined issue with the committee and has set their authority at defiance."
