Full Text

The efforts of the friends of Britain to smother the indignant feelings which her vile practice of impressment excites in American bosoms. are as palpable as they are vain and fruitless. A spirit of inquiry on this subject is daily manifesting itself, and ere long, the determination to resist the vile, enslaving principle, will be universal, except with those, who, deaf to every sentiment of reason and patriotism, are daily perjuring their unblushing apostacy, in the face of common sense and political consistency. The following case, exhibits, in a striking view, the mild forbearance of British officers towards American seamen! Isaac Jenkins of Kittery, in the District of Maine, sailed from New York on board the brig Twins, Capt. Dugan, in the month of March, 1812 ; and, in April following, having arrived at Gibraltar, was impressed and taken on board a British brig of war, detained until the month of October following, when, being returned to Gibraltar from a cruise, he escaped by swimming to an American brig that lay about a mile distance from his floating prison. From the brig he was conveyed to an American ship, that put to sea the same night, and proceeded to Brazil and New York. There were five other Americans on board the British brig at the same time with Jenkins. His brother Luke Jenkins is now impressed and on board the British frigate Jason.
