By letters from Philadelphia, we learn that the American Philosophical Society is carried on with great Spirit, and has lately been the Means of promoting much useful Knowledge. This is the first literary Establishment settled beyond the Atlantick Ocean, and gives a striking Proof of the Greatness and Prosperity of our Colonies, for Men seldom or never form themselves into Societies of that Kind where Ease and Affluence are not eminently enjoyed.

This Society at Philadelphia propose paying Attention to every Thing which contributes to the Advancement of natural knowledge, though their chief Design is avowedly to promote the Improvement of their Country. For that Purpose, they are resolved to inquire particularly what America is capable of producing; what Improvements may be made in Agriculture, Farming, Gardening, &c. the cheapest and best Methods of making Highways, Causeways, and Bridges, joining of Rivers, and increasing their inland Navigation; at the same Time, paying a due Share of Attention to scientifick and literary Pursuits.
