Full Text
A letter has been received in this city from officer Benjamin Hayes, who accompanied Justice Lowndes to England to demand from the British Government the surrender of John Clinton, who had been arrested there, charged with having committed several forgeries in New Orleans and the Western States. Prior to the date of Mr. Hayes' letter, which is of the 18th ult., he had been sent for to attend the examination of Clinton, and was brought into a room where there were some forty or fifty persons; and the moment Mr. Hayes cast his eyes around them, he at once singled out Clinton, with whose person he was fully acquainted as that of John Reed, who had formerly been a noted burglar and thief in this city, and who had been twice in the State Prison of this State, once in the Massachusetts State Prison, and once in the State Prison of New Jersey, from whence he escaped. Justice Lowndes was also examined on the subject, and also a Mr. Corquodale, who saw the prisoner at New Orleans about the time the forgeries were committed. This testimony was, however, deemed insufficient to convict the accused of the crime for which he was arrested in London, and the examination was adjourned to give time for procuring further evidence.
