Patriotism, like Religion, often enjoins duties which are paramount to every other consideration, and though the selfish part of mankind derogate from the merit of every action performed by their co-temporaries, by imputing the motives to inferior considerations--yet a conscious integrity will furnish a reward for every public spirited exertion, of which envy and censure cannot deprive the votaries of virtue and benevolence.
