Tornado Struck Rowland
Three Negro Children Killed.

[The State, 27th.]

The destructive tornado that struck the mill village at Union Sunday afternoon, killing and wounding several people, did not spend all its force in Union county. The fall of the temperature here of 24 degrees in five minutes indicated that Columbia was close in the path of the weird monster, but it was not known until yesterday that it came so near. Yesterday morning news reached the city that it had struck the lower portion of this county with great severity and had killed at least three persons. The tornado struck the country around Eastover and leveled the house of a negro named Washington Haynes on a hill on the Weston plantation. In the collapse of the house three of Haynes' children were killed outright, and a number of persons who were in the house were injured. Whether others at points beyond fell victims or not could not be ascertained here yesterday.

It is said that the tornado not only blew down houses, fences and trees, but completely ruined the young crops around Eastover, corn being cut off at the ground.

The names of the three Haynes children who were killed could not be ascertained yesterday.

THREE NEGRO CHILDREN KILLED IN SUNDAY'S STORM.

Congaree, May 26.--News of the death of three children, aged 14, 16, 18 respectively, of Wash Hayne, a respectable colored man living on the estate of the late Dr. William Weston, has just been received here. The house of Hayne is situated four miles below here and was in the tail end of the tornado which passed here yesterday afternoon. The inmates of the house were all inside when the house was lifted from the earth and the three persons were buried to death against flying timbers. Three killed and one fatally wounded is the result of the casualty.
