Messrs. Editors: Since you invite discussion on the Banking question, I should like to make a few remarks on the subject. It is urged by your correspondent 'Citizen,' that we require more banking capital to aid us in our commercial pursuits. Now it seems to me that we want that confidence in one-another, which bank accommodations tend to destroy; they lead to undue speculations in those who depend upon them, and their failure injures those who depend upon their own capital and industry to support them. I do not believe that a State Bank would be conducted, or could be conducted so as not to cause a pressure at times; that the United States' Bank has done it more than she had any need to do, I believe, for political purposes. But the defect is inherent in the present principle of banking, and I believe tends to throw capital into the hands of real estate speculators, and money loaners; for we find that they are seldom without capital, while the men of business are often in difficulty; and it does likewise seem that the multiplication of banks increases the demand for money, of those who live by loaning it. It is evident that the more banks they have in the East, the more they want; and it is likewise notorious that the doings of the small capitalists and working-men are not as profitable as they are here. And it does appear to me, that the increase of bank capitalists, increases the dependence of the large body of the people on the wealthy, which is the cause of the existing bondage in Europe; and, therefore, it behoves us seriously to consider whether the same causes may not produce the same effects here.
