GUILFORD MAN GETS 375 DAYS SENTENCE

Frank P. Balch of Guilford pleaded guilty in the municipal court this morning to having in his possession one deer skin, two fox skins and three skunk skins in the closed season. He was ordered to pay a fine of $125 and costs of $55.14. Balch was unable to raise the cash and was committed to the house of correction at Rutland to the alternative sentence of 375 days. Game Warden George Alexander of Saxtons River was the complainant and State's Attorney J. V. D. Prouty appeared for the state. Deputy Sheriff Frank L. Wellman of Guilford made the arrest. The officers say that Balch has been suspected of poaching to some extent, but that he managed to avoid detection until caught yesterday with the evidence in his possession. The statutes provide that the possession of a deer skin in the close season is prima facie evidence of guilt and a fine of $100 is the penalty.
