SUMMER TOURIST CAMP WILL OPEN ON TAKU RIVER

Details of Venture Are Given at Meeting of Business Men Last Night.

Details of the establishment of an outdoor tourist camp near the mouth of Taku River by the Taku River Trading Company were given to the Juneau Chamber of Commerce last night by Dr. H. C. DeVighne and given the endorsement of the organization. The camp will be opened early this summer and present indications for a big season are encouraging, it was said.

The camp will consist of a big central hall, constructed of logs, 20 feet by 40 feet; 15 tents fully furnished for occupancy; boats for river and bay navigation; guides for parties and equipment necessary for such an undertaking. Furniture for the camp, said Dr. DeVighne, is already purchased. A crew of men will leave here within a few days to begin construction of the permanent camp.

Advertising is now appearing in about 15 magazines of wide Eastern and national circulation and will be continued through the April issues. Returns from these advertisements are received on every mail. The plans of the company were communicated sometime ago to the Alaska Steamship Company, the Admiral Line, the Canadian Pacific Railway and transcontinental railways in the United States. The two American steamship companies and the Canadian Pacific promised cooperation and the last mentioned has asked for descriptive literature at its own expense. Three American railroads have also made inquiries for additional information. Many inquiries have been made from prominent individuals in the East and South, said Dr. DeVighne, who said that nothing was desired for the camp from the Chamber except its endorsement.

May Furnish Hangar

The proposition of a hangar for the seaplane recently received here for Dr. DeVighne was discussed and will be handled by the local industries committee, W. G. Johnson, chairman.

The machine will be assembled early this spring and operated by H. C. Hanna, mechanic at Marshall Newman & Co., who is now in Seattle training under Eddie Hubbard. Hanna, according to Hubbard, is making good as a flyer.

Appoint Entertainment Committee

President Allen Shattuck was authorized to appoint a special committee of three members to arrange for entertainment for the members of the Legislature at either a lunch or a banquet. The committee is composed of Henry Roden, J. F. Mullen and E. J. White.

The members of the organization were unanimously opposed to discontinuing its work even temporarily and adopted a motion authorizing the executive committee to prepare a new schedule of procedure, changing the form heretofore followed. A motion by Secretary Whittier to change the name from the Juneau Commercial Association to the Juneau Chamber of Commerce was also unanimously adopted.

Transfer Fair Funds

Funds in the treasury of the Chamber accruing from the Country Fair held last September were formally authorized to be transferred to the permanent Fair Association.

The special fair committee, which was continued by the Association last fall pending the organization of a permanent body to look after future events of that nature, was formally discharged with a vote of thanks.

Several actions taken by the executive committee since the last regular meeting of the Chamber were approved.

Need More Literature

One of the most pressing needs of the Chamber, said Secretary Whittier, is additional literature relative to Juneau and this district. Many inquiries are being received on every mail for information and the Chamber's supply of publicity material is virtually exhausted. More than 300 letters of inquiry have been received and answered by the Secretary since January 1, he said.
