We hear of nothing but disturbances and tumults from every side. Libels are dispersed and fixed up daily. The populace have carried their insolence so far as to attempt to set fire to the castle of the Duke of Ancos, situated near Alicant, and did not even hesitate to excite commotions at the palace of St. Ildefonso. Two officers returned from Carthagena, where they had been to escort the Marquis de Squilace, have found everywhere on the road the people all in a ferment, crying out, 'Long live the King, let Squilace perish.' According to private letters from Madrid, divers persons of the first rank were strongly suspected by the court of secretly stirring up the late insurrections for the removal of the Marquis Squilace; but that the perplexed situation of the times did not permit any public enquiries to be made into the affair.
