It has been rumored, and partially credited in some places, that President Lincoln will extend the draft so as to include the drafting of an additional force of three hundred thousand men. We believe that the President does not contemplate such action at this time. When the six hundred thousand men called for recently, are fully equipped and in the field, as soon they will be, the Federal force will be sufficient to conquer the rebel armies, without any additional force. Adding this number to the old army and we have a force of nearly a million of soldiers. The trouble cannot then be with the number of troops, but in the manner in which they are handled. A well equipped army of one million soldiers, controlled by skillful generals, should be able to make a speedy overthrow of the rebel government. If this number of troops cannot be used in a skillful and successful manner it is not very probable that half a million more would be used in the same way. If such immense levies continue to be called into service, it will soon be necessary to arm women and children, as Napoleon I. once remarked to a Minister at his Court. The industrial resources of the country will be injuriously affected. The battle-field, is not the only place where able-bodied men are needed. But they are needed in the peaceful pursuits of life to provide the means of supporting the armies. If the force which the Government is now preparing for the field, is handled with skill, the rebellion will last only during the coming campaign. It cannot possibly sustain itself against such a force.
