VAN WYCK HAILED
AS MAN OF DESTINY

Everything in New York Politics
Turns in His
Favor.

PARKHURST'S ENMITY HELPS HIM
Mrs. Grannis, Also, Plays Into His Hands.
Tammany Is Happy-The Tiger
Will Triumph.

New York, Oct. 23.-Every turn of
the political wheel here in the big city
has been favorable to Van Wyck. It
is not that he and his managers are so
much wiser than any other political
managers or that the judge himself is
regarded as possessing to the highest
possible degree and beyond everybody
else the qualifications essential to the
mayoralty, but the democratic candi-
date seems to have been born under a
lucky star. Every move of his ene-
mies has played into Van Wyck's
hands.

The latest great plays of the Low
people are to have Mrs. Grannis at-
tack the democratic candidate for his
visit to the French ball some years
ago, and then to resurrect Parkhurst
getting him to declare for Low.
The Parkhurst matter came to a head
yesterday. The leap-frog reformer
writes from Switzerland, where he has
for some time been in a retreat. He
declares for Low and hurls the usual
"reform" criticisms at Plattism and
Crokerism.

If anything were needed to insure
the defeat of the "reform" candidate
in this fight it is furnished in the ap-
pearance of Parkhurst. The wise Low
men-those that are not political ama-
teurs-have been disclaiming as em-
phatically as they could any connec-
tion with the present reform adminis-
tration, and all responsibility for the
many mistakes of the Strong-Park-
hurst combination. This disclaimer lost
much of its force by the fact that
Strong has declared for Low, but to
some extent it has been effective.
From the first Tammany has prayed
for Parkhurst.
The appearance of
Parkhurst advocating the citizens'
union ticket was, in the opinion of the
practical politicians of the wigwam,
the only thing necessary to insure an
overwhelming victory for Van Wyck.
The Tammany leaders have recog-
nized all the time that it had Low to
beat, and knowing how sick and tired
the whole city is of the sham reform
for which Parkhurst was so largely
responsible, they have anxiously hoped
that the doctor might show his hand
in favor of Low. Now that he has done
it, there is much rejoicing in the wig-
wam, and the anti-Tammany betters
are calling for greater odds.

Democratic mayoral candidate Van Wyck benefits from opponents' actions, including Mrs. Grannis's attack on his past and Parkhurst's endorsement of Low from Switzerland, which revives distaste for past reform failures and ensures Van Wyck's victory according to Tammany leaders.
