Sterilization Bill To Be Sought For Unmarried Mothers

A sterilization act aimed at curbing illegitimate births will be introduced at the January session of the Legislature according to Rep Quimby Melton Jr., of Griffin.

Melton said he would offer the measure at the request of the Spalding County grand jury. The jury requested the passage of a sterilization bill in a recent presentment.

The legislator said unwed mothers would be sterilized under the bill after they had produced two illegitimate children.

Before receiving welfare payments for a third illegitimate child they should be sterilized to prevent a further birth out of wedlock," he said.
