NEW COMMISSIONS
Former State Superintendent George B. Cook Heads State Text Book Commission.
Little Rock, March 16.—In compliance with the provisions of two of the recently enacted administrative educational measures, Governor Brough yesterday announced the appointment of members of the state text book board and the state illiteracy commission.
Each board is created by an act of the last legislature and the appointments are honorary. The text book board members will receive traveling expenses and $5 a day during their meetings. Members of the illiteracy commission may be reimbursed for their traveling expenses out of any funds coming into the hands of the commission.
Members of the text book board are: George B. Cook of Little Rock, former state superintendent of public instruction; O. L. Dunaway, superintendent of schools of Texarkana; T. P. Johnson, superintendent of schools of Earle; Harvey Combs of Huntsville, an attorney and clerk of the house during the last legislature; B. J. Reaves of Little Rock, traveling agent for the Roberts-Johnson-Rand branch of the International Shoe Company; D. C. Hastings, superintendent of schools of Crossett, and G. M. Hirst, a business man of Prescott.
The illiteracy commission consists of Mrs. John Ike Moore of Helena, Mrs. Frank Milwee of Clarendon; George B. Reed, superintendent of schools of Fort Smith; J. W. Ramsey, O. superintendent of schools of Paragould; U. C. Barnett, superintendent of schools of Dermott; W. A. Ramsey, principal of the Fayetteville high school; Sam Criswell, a planter of Bradford, and Ury M. McKenzie, superintendent of schools of Texarkana.
J. L. Bond, state superintendent of public instruction, is an ex-officio member of each board, and Governor Brough is an ex-officio member of the text-book board. Members of the text-book board are appointed for six years and their duty is to adopt a uniform series of text-books for use in the grades of all public schools.
Text-books for high schools are not affected by the act.
Members of the illiteracy commission are appointed for four years. The commission will make research, collect data and investigate to obtain the true educational status of the state, and to devise means of stamping out illiteracy. The act creating the commission calls specific attention to adult illiteracy. The commission will make annual reports to the governor and it is probable that it may submit measures for enactment to the next legislature.
