Event Details
A turtle has come annually to the nest to deposit her eggs for fifty-two years. She selected the nest over half a century ago in an open field, now in a yard in front of a residence. A relative of the owner branded 1841 on her back. She inspects the nest and surroundings for a few days, then digs a hole to deposit eggs. She has been seen at Drew Dead Water on the Mattawamkeag river, fifty miles away. Her weight is thirty to thirty-five pounds, same size as when branded. She departs after laying eggs; sand and sun incubate them.
