MAN OVERBOARD.
As the Lake Champlain Steamer Adirondack was on her way North, Wednesday afternoon, about midway between Burlington and Port Kent, the attention of some of the passengers was aroused by a splash in the water and a moment after a man was discovered in the water astern, apparently struggling to reach a valise which was floating a few feet farther in the rear. He was seen to reach and clutch the valise and place it under his arms as if for support; but soon disappeared from sight. The steamer was stopped as soon as possible, and a small boat manned and sent to the rescue; but the steamer had made considerable distance meanwhile, and the only result of the search was to find a hat floating in the wake of the steamer, a mile astern. The steamer Bascom came up while the search was in progress and aided in it; but no more trace could be discovered of the drowned man. Who he was is not known. The boat being unusually crowded, the names of all the passengers were not taken, and no one known to be on board is missed. The hat is a common black, soft hat, of rather small size. An overcoat of dark cloth, with beaver collar, was found on the boat, which is supposed to have belonged to the lost man. The articles may yet lead to the discovery of his name and residence. It is thought that he came on the boat south of Burlington. A Port Henry passenger was of the impression that it might have been a runner for a clothing house. Another passenger thought the man seen in the water, resembled a man he saw talking to a woman, on the wharf at Burlington, just before the steamer left. But really nothing like a definite clue to the missing man can be found.
