Full Text

Penitent McComas.

Judge C. C. McComas, late of the senate, put in an appearance in this city yesterday at 2:20 p. m., giving him ample time to prepare for taking an active part in the clubbing exercises of the Penitentes.

The GAZETTE's query of yesterday morning was answered by the gentleman in person. Mr. Mills is absent in Topeka. It is not expected that he will arrive. McComas dined at the Depot hotel, where he called for a glass of water, dry bread and native beef. He then proceeded to the Novelty Emporium and purchased two clubs of the heaviest and toughest kind made of buffalo tree. One of these clubs he presented to the GAZETTE reporter. Alone and on foot he made his way to Penitente hill, seven miles north of the city. He will take an active part in the proceedings today and will be accompanied by Judge Waldo and Colonel Louis Sulzbacher.

It is difficult to decide whether McComas means to fairly, squarely and honestly club himself or not, as the reporter observed at his wrists the cuffs of seven blue flannel shirts and from a member of the staff he borrowed an overcoat before going to Penitente hill. The closest watch of him will be kept in his actions today.

Story Details

Judge C. C. McComas arrives in the city to participate in the Penitentes' clubbing exercises, dines simply, purchases heavy clubs, and heads to Penitente hill, accompanied by Judge Waldo and Colonel Louis Sulzbacher, though his preparations suggest he may not fully commit to self-clubbing.
