AMENDMENT TO HOME RULE BILL DEFEATED BY TIE VOTE --SULZER DELIVERS SIX THOUSAND WORD SPEECH FAVORING HOME RULE FOR ALASKA
Washington, April 24.--The Alaska home rule bill is up for discussion in the house today.
If the measure passes it will not carry suffrage for the women of Alaska, as the suffrage amendment was defeated by a tie vote.
Representative Mann of Illinois offered an amendment to the Alaska home rule bill giving women the right to vote. The vote on the amendment was taken by a rising vote and showed 29 to 29. A vote was then taken by tellers and again showed a tie, being 31 to 31. The amendment was declared lost.
Congressman Sulzer made a six thousand word speech demanding home rule for Alaska. He said both the Republicans and Democrats of Alaska were in favor of the measure and that both party conventions held in Alaska recently had demanded home rule as the principle plank of their platforms. He also said that there was not a newspaper in Alaska which was opposing the measure.
