There will be an NLRB election at the Flexible Mfg. Co., in its plant at Loudenville, Ohio, for the 577 employees who are eligible to vote, for an independent union, no union, or the UAW-CIO to act as bargaining agents for the employees.
According to Walter Murphy, International Representative, the company is engaged in the manufacture of automobile bodies, coaches, and funeral cars.
Flexible Vote Set By NLRB
UAW Opposed By Independents
LOUDENVILLE, July 12-Employees of the Flexible Coach Co. here will vote in an NLRB-conducted election July 16 at the company's plant to determine a bargaining agent in an election contested by the UAW-CIO and the Independent Workers Association, a so-called independent union.
Permission to hold the election was granted following a hearing here presided over by John Irving, Cleveland, representing the regional NLRB office. Evidence that the UAW had a sufficient number of members signed to qualify for an election was submitted and accepted by the hearings officer.
Qualified to vote are 577 employees of the company. Hours set by the NLRB for the vote were from 2 to 4 p. m. in designated places at the company's plant.
Drive Is Completed
Organizational work was completed by Edward J. Duck and Stanley Cutcher, assigned here by the International UAW-CIO on May 11. Both men have expressed their confidence in the outcome of the election and believe that the plant will go CIO by a substantial majority.
A previous election in which the AFL sought to obtain bargaining rights ended with defeat of the bona fide union by the Independent Workers Association.
Intense interest in the outcome of the election is being shown by members of Local 711, Lima, employed at the Superior Coach Co. who point to their $1.71 plant-wide productive average as an indication of what the UAW-CIO has accomplished for them since they chose the CIO union several years ago.
Committee Is Effective
Organizational work in the Flexible plant has been particularly effective because of the efforts of the plant organizing committee of 40 members.
A temporary bargaining committee has been selected which will act until the contract has been signed if the UAW is successful in next Tuesday's election.
Members of the plant bargaining committee are George Young, chairman; Kenneth Long and Theodore Ullman, vice-chairmen. John Haulblaugh, secretary, and Leland Barnes, Jack Merritt, Pete Paullin, Russell Beechy and Ed Hilton, members-at-large.
