WASHINGTON. (AP) - Senator McGrath (D.-R. I.) assured Delegate Bartlett of Alaska today he favors immediate statehood for Alaska.
Bartlett told a reporter the Democratic national chairman expressed the opinion Congress should act without delay in carrying out the Democratic platform advocacy of statehood for the Territory.
Bartlett said he planned to introduce in the House in a day or two a bill to abolish fish traps in Alaska over a period of years.
He said the bill would not contain any provisions licensing mobile gear.
The fish and wildlife service of the interior department had suggested such a provision.
"If the service feels a licensing system is necessary, it can always make an independent recommendation to Congress." Bartlett said
"However, the people of Alaska voted for trap abolition and trap abolition only."
