The rumors that have agitated our public in the past ten days in regard to the alleged dark doings in the Pahquioque hotel, will find explanation in the following card:
"There having been various reports about a death having occurred in the Pahquioque hotel, and complaint after complaint entered, we, as grand jurymen, after a thorough investigation into the matter, deem it just and right to all implicated to publish the facts. Report had it that a woman had died there and that Dr. J. H. Benedict was implicated. This was not true, Mr. Blackman's child, four months old, died of small pox, and through the advice of the Dr., and as they supposed, for the good of the public, it was buried in the night. While removing the casket from the house it was seen by a person who became frightened and started these reports. Dr. Benedict claimed for his reputation that the grand jury should investigate the matter. and it was through his influence that the body was exhumed and examined, when it was found as Dr. Benedict had stated -a case of small pox-therefore we exonerate Dr. Benedict and the house and claim that all these reports are false and without any foundation whatever, so far as we have been able to ascertain."
