The Petition of TESTY humbly sheweth—
THAT he has at all times exerted himself to collect the taxes for building the new gaol in the county of Rockingham, and therefore ought not to be hinted at in the public prints. Although failing in this point, he has ever studied the interest of the committee, having thrown in their way several crown jobs, which he hop'd would have afforded them a temporary support: but here the gentlemen may plead the old proverb—'That all such workings are attended with great pains and little gains to help along.'—Said Testy further says, that he is now certain of collecting the money as soon as the oath-mongers, non-jurors and whittlers have settled their accounts, which is drawing near to a final close. It has been whispered that non-jurors and co. had failed: but said Testy, further affirms, that it is an impudent lye, that they do stop payment. Owing to an unexpected run upon them by government; and that they now go on doing business as usual, and will be glad to serve any of their old friends. Further he saith not.
