Very Severe Weather Reported at Many Points in the West.
SNOW OF THE WET, SOGGY KIND THAT BREAKS TELEGRAPH WIRES AND POLES. FALLING IN GREAT QUANTITIES - FREEZING WEATHER BEYOND THE MISSISSIPPI - THE STORM MOVING IN A NORTH-EASTERLY DIRECTION.
Kansas City, Mo., October 17. - The following was issued by observer Connor, of the local weather bureau:
"A storm of great force is central in the Mississippi valley, which during the next twenty-four hours will have a northeast course, carrying it over the great lakes, causing heavy precipitation and gales. Since Sunday morning heavy rain fell in Iowa, Missouri and eastern Kansas, the heaviest being in Northwest Missouri, where it amounted to 2 1/2 inches. At 7 a. m., rain was falling in the Mississippi valley from St. Paul to Memphis. In the western States the temperature has fallen to the freezing point and the rain changed to snow in Western Iowa, Eastern Nebraska, Northeast Kansas and Northwest Missouri. The snow will not remain on the ground long. Clearing conditions are expected in this section this evening, admitting of heavy frost to-night, followed on Tuesday by fair and warmer."
A heavy wind prevailed at some points and dozens of telegraph poles are reported down, especially between Kansas City and Lawrence, Kansas, and between St. Joseph and Omaha. The conditions beyond those points can only be surmised. Local telephone and street car service has not been affected to any extent.
Sedalia, Mo., October 17. - Snow began falling to-day and soon a regular blizzard was raging. It rained all last night, but turned colder to-day. Many telegraph and telephone wires are down.
Leavenworth, Kans., October 17. - The storm that set in to-day came near wrecking the camp of the Twenty-second Kansas volunteers. Nearly all the tents were blown down and the soldiers were permitted to come to the city to seek shelter from the snow and wind. The ground was soft from the rain of Sunday, and when to-day's storm came up tents toppled over in every direction. The cook and provision tents were among the first to go and all the rations were soaked. It was impossible to prepare meals and arrangements to feed the men in town will be made. Most of the soldiers were without money to buy meals.
PITTSBURG, Kas., October 17. - A cold rain in this section was followed last night by a snow storm which covered the ground to the depth of nearly an inch by daylight. It continued snowing until about 10 o'clock, when a cold rain began falling.
YATES CENTRE, Kas., October 17. - A heavy snow storm has prevailed here since 12 o'clock last night, preceded by eighteen hours of rain. Stock on the ranges is suffering greatly.
BOONEVILLE Mo., October 17. - The first snow of the season fell here to-day, sooner than for many years. A strong wind is blowing.
CHILLICOTHE, Mo., October 17. - A light snow, the first of the season, is falling here.
LAWRENCE, Kas., October 17. - From daybreak to 3 o'clock this afternoon communication with the outside world has been impossible as a result of the present storm. Trees have been stripped and broken, telephone and telegraph lines demolished, and other damage done. South of here the wires and poles are down for a great distance.
ST. JOSEPH, Mo., October 17. - A wet blinding snow began falling here last midnight. A high wind raged until nearly noon, when it subsided and the snow ceased. The movement of railroad trains has not been seriously interfered with. The storm caught many poor people without fuel and much suffering is reported to the charity superintendent.
