Full Text
It is somewhat curious as a trait of the human character to observe the changed 'principles with times.' Heretofore, in good old times, the doctrine was, 'that standing armies in time of peace are dangerous to liberty;' now, the exclusive friends of the people, the professors of democracy, are abusing the late Congress for disbanding a part of the army when peace was concluded. Not satisfied with burthening the nation with a load of taxes to pay off the debt incurred during the war, the democratic editors incline to increase that burthen to pay a standing army in time of peace.
