Full Text

Samuel, son of Capt. Samuel Borland of Newcastle, met with a distressing and painful accident, while out gunning on Saturday of last week. While resting his hand near the muzzle of his gun, it was accidentally discharged and the contents of one barrel entered the back of his left hand, completely severing the two middle fingers so that they hung by a single shred of flesh, and badly mutilating the back of the hand. Two or three shot penetrated the skin on his forehead, but were easily extracted. His left eye was also somewhat injured by the powder from the charge, but it is hoped, not seriously. In this condition he was brought home, a distance of four miles, and displayed a courage and fortitude that is seldom seen in one so young. The amputation of the two fingers and sewing up of the wound after the patient had been placed under the influence of ether, was skillfully performed by Doctors Call and Dixon, and the patient is now doing well.
