Event Details
People in the southwest part of the county have been greatly troubled this spring and summer by the depredations of grey wolves and coyotes. Their losses have been so great that they are trying to organize themselves into a society to pay a big bounty for scalps. A number of persons in Aetna and Deerhead townships have joined the society, and the citizens of Elwood and Eagle townships are requested to join. As soon as enough signatures are obtained to justify the move, a reward of $1.50 will be offered for coyote scalps, and $17 for wolf scalps. The county is now paying $1.50 for coyote scalps, and $5 for wolf scalps. The private bounty added to that of the county will make coyote scalps worth $3, and wolf scalps worth $20. It is hoped this large bounty will stimulate the destruction of the animals. A tax of 50 cents on the 100 head of cattle in the four townships it is thought would pay all the bounties. Those who will join are requested to send their names to John Finley, at Sexton.
