What is this article about?

High power rates in Imperial Valley, California, are attributed to electricity transmitted over 400 miles from Sierra Nevada hydro-electric plants, the world's longest line, leading to high costs and inadequate distribution. W. S. Cone reports that generating power from the All American Canal will eliminate this, reducing losses and rates.

POWER RATES BLAMED ON LONG 'HAUL'

One of the main reasons why the cities of Imperial Valley have the highest power rates among cities of their population classification in the state of California lies in the fact that the electric energy distributed here is brought to the county from hydro-electric power plants located high in the Sierra Nevada mountains, a distance of over 400 miles.

This fact is pointed out by W. S. Cone, electrical engineer, in his report to the Imperial Irrigation district board of directors on the subject of power development in the district from the All American canal: when he stated that power is brought here "over what is called the longest transmission line in the world with consequent high power costs and an inadequate distributing system."

In a statement issued by the board of directors a comment is made on this situation to the effect that with power generated on the All American canal this long transmission line of the private power company will no longer be used. This will mean a smaller loss of power in transmission; consequent lower rates to consumers and a better distributing system in the district.
