Newburgh, N. Y., Dec. 14.—There is hidden in some bank or banker's vault a little fortune belonging to a machinist who was found dead in the Merchants' Hotel here a few days ago and which cannot be found. The intimate friends of the man, whose name was William J. Keller, estimate the sum to be about $8,000 or $10,000. Keller was an excellent mechanic, and earned large wages. He died from suffocation by gas, and the coroner's jury found it was an accident. He never mentioned where his possessions are. He is known to have saved from $5,000 to $6,000 while employed as an engineer in an extensive manufacturing establishment in Macon, Ga., during the last five or six years of his life. The administrator of his personal estate, who is looking after the hidden treasure, searched the dead man's trunk to-day, but no bank book, certificate of deposit nor anything else was found tending to show where his money is deposited. Further effort will be made where he lived before coming to Newburgh. Keller was an Englishman and the night before he died said that he had a brother and sister living in England.
