PLATTSBURGH, January 18.
The winter with us, so far, has been remarkably mild; the lake (Champlain) is yet navigable—and not sufficient snow for sleighing. Thereby at present preventing an ice expedition by the British, and rendering one by land difficult, if intended. It is not probable the broad lake will be shut this winter.
Maj. Gen. Strong of the Vermont militia, has issued a general order, in consequence of the movements of the enemy in Canada, indicating a probable invasion, in which he urges on his division the necessity of being prepared for a short winter's campaign. He states the regular forces on that frontier to be inadequate to withstand any serious effort of the enemy.
Extract from the General Orders.
"Information is received which fully indicates, that the enemy are again preparing to invade our country, with an intention no doubt to commit their cruel barbarities upon the innocent women, children, the aged and infirm. It is hoped and expected that every officer and soldier will feel on this occasion the highest necessity of using every exertion to prepare and equip himself, for the defence of his country. It will be recollected that you are the hardy sons of the Green Mountain Boys, who aided in a glorious victory at the Battle of Bennington, and in the final capture of Burgoyne, and you will not at this important crisis dishonor the character of your fathers."

The winter has been remarkably mild, keeping Lake Champlain navigable with insufficient snow for sleighing, preventing a British ice expedition and complicating land ones. Maj. Gen. Strong of the Vermont militia issued a general order urging preparation for a possible invasion due to enemy movements in Canada, noting inadequate regular forces on the frontier. The order warns of enemy preparations to invade and commit barbarities, calling on soldiers as descendants of Green Mountain Boys to defend the country.
