CRIMINAL TRIALS.

John H. Shanks was tried before the Circuit Court of this corporation, (Judge Wm. Daniel presiding,) on Thursday last, on a charge of forging and obtaining the money for a check in the name of Col. Maurice Langhorne, and sentenced to two years' confinement in the penitentiary. (C. L. Mosby for the Commonwealth, and Wm. Daniel, jr. for the prisoner. Shanks confessed his guilt, and threw himself on the mercy of the Jury. We have no doubt, from the ingenuousness of his countenance, as well as from the circumstances of the case, that Shanks is a novice in crime, and this consideration had, we suspect, its due weight with the Jury, whose sentence is the lightest which the law allows.
