What is this article about?

The 1824 presidential election in Maryland features multiple elector candidates supporting Crawford, Adams, Calhoun, and Jackson, likely dividing the state's vote, though Adams supporters predict unity for him. In Mississippi, Jackson and Adams tickets compete closely, with the outcome uncertain; Crawford's prior claim fails.

Full Text

In Maryland and Mississippi, the presidential election promises an animated canvass. In one of the Maryland districts, four persons have already offered as electors, one of whom is for Mr. Crawford, one for Mr. Adams, one for Mr. Calhoun, and one for Gen. Jackson. In the other districts, persons are announced as candidates for electors, favorable to different candidates, and as that state votes by districts, it is probable that her vote will be divided, although the friends of Mr. Adams, who have good opportunities of acquiring a knowledge of the true strength of parties, think that her undivided vote will be given for that gentleman. In Mississippi, two tickets are nominated, one in favor of Gen. Jackson, and the other of Mr. Adams; both supported with ability and zeal--and neither appearing to be very sanguine of success. The vote of that state is evidently doubtful; though it will certainly be either for Gen. Jackson or the Secretary of State. Her vote was claimed, if we mistake not, for Mr. Crawford, by the author of the "Political Horse Race"--but she has "balked."
