Alabama Preacher Charges That
Convicts Are Brutally Treated

Mobile, July 30 (By the Associated Press). Rev. E. Locklear, attacking the Alabama convict leasing system, in a sermon Sunday in the First Baptist Church, charged that "Human beings are being cut to pieces with lashes such as one would not dare strike a mule with, for fear of being arrested for cruelty, and many of them have marks on their bodies which will be carried to their graves."
